Version 1.3, in force from .

The standard the desks work to

The desks are held to the Norms of Journalistic Conduct of the Press Council of India and the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, which the Code of Ethics in the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 applies to publishers of news and current affairs content online, and to the site's own standard at /how-we-work. Nothing prohibited by any law for the time being in force is to be published.

A person's religion, caste, family and private life are not subjects for the desks unless the person has made them the subject of a public statement, and then only that statement.

An allegation of a crime or of corruption is reported only as an allegation, with who made it and where, and with the response of the person accused where one has been published.

A matter before a court is reported from the order or the proceedings, without predicting or urging an outcome.

No AI-made or AI-altered image, audio or video of a real person. Photographs and footage are real and credited; how a photograph is prepared is set out on the page "How AI is used here".

Satire is published only on the Troll page and under the Troll desk, is marked as satire, begins with the real passage it answers, and puts no words in anyone's mouth. A person publishes each piece.

Opinion of the site's own is marked "Opinion", rests on sources the record holds, is read and published by a person, and never asks for a vote.

Elections

The site does not ask anyone to vote for or against a party or a candidate, or to abstain. How it holds back election matter before a poll closes, and that it publishes no polls, is set out in the Terms of use under "Elections".

Counts of attention are described as counts of attention. They are never described as support, a lead or a forecast.

Corrections

A line shown to be wrong is corrected or removed, and a correction to something readers have seen goes in the public log at /corrections (see /how-we-work). A complaint from the person a post is about is looked at before any other. How to complain, and by when it is answered, is on the Complaints page.

Rules of the floor and of comments

Write under your own account, in your own words, about what you have seen or think. You may criticise what any person, party or government said or did as strongly as you wish. A member can post on the floor up to 12 times in 24 hours.

Do not: abuse a person; attack a caste, religion, community, language group or gender; ask for votes for or against anyone; post about an election in its silence period; threaten; publish anyone's personal details; post what you know to be false; post AI-made pictures, audio or video of real people; impersonate anyone; post for pay or as part of an organised campaign without saying so; or advertise.

The full list of what the law forbids is in the Terms of use and applies here.

What happens to a post that breaks the rules

A post or comment containing a word on the site's list is held automatically and is visible only to its writer until a person has looked at it. A person may then show it, keep it held or remove it. Staff may also hold or remove a post or comment that was not caught.

Repeated or serious breaches lead to suspension or closing of the account.

If you think a decision was wrong, write to the Grievance Officer.
